Choosing a width
The rule is simple: the tape should be a little wider than the board is thick, so it overhangs slightly on both sides. You trim the overhang flush after ironing. That is what gives the edge its clean, solid-wood look.
For standard boards
22 mm
Covers boards up to 18 mm thick: standard chipboard, MFC and plywood used for cabinets, wardrobes and shelving. The everyday choice: if you are edging flat-pack-style panels, this is it.
For thick panels
30 mm
Covers boards up to 25 mm: thick shelving, desk tops and doubled-up panels. Also the safe pick when a board is nominally 18 mm but carries a lipping or laminate that adds thickness.
For worktops and wide edges
50 mm
For worktops, stair strings, plinths and anywhere the visible edge is wider than a standard board, up to about 45 mm after trimming.
Which length?
7.5 m or 50 m
7.5 m comfortably edges a wardrobe or a run of shelves. 50 m is the trade roll, better value per metre when you edge boards regularly.
